Ⅰ What is lutein extract?
Lutein extract is a type of xanthophyll often used in treatment or prevention of eye diseases. Lutein supplements contain a natural substance classified as a carotenoid—a group of plant pigments with antioxidant effects. Lutein supplements provide a more concentrated supply of this antioxidant.
Ⅱ What does lutein extract do to your body?
Lutein extract is one of two major carotenoids found in the human eye (macula and retina). It is thought to function as a light filter, protecting the eye tissues from sunlight damage. Foods rich in lutein include egg yolks, spinach, kale, corn, orange pepper, kiwi fruit, grapes, zucchini, and squash.
Ⅲ Where is lutein extracted from?
The most important source (more than 20-times higher amount) are flower petals of Marigold, where lutein is chemically bound to various types of fatty acids such as lauric, mystric and palmitic acids. Upon saponification of the Marigold extract, the lutein fatty acid esters are converted to free lutein (Khachik, 1995).
Ⅳ What is lutein made from?
Lutein and zeaxanthin are made only by plants, so animals normally get them by eating plants. Highest concentrations are found in dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, swiss chard, and mustard and turnip greens − although these nutrients are also found in a variety of other vegetables (see table, below).
